Project Description Following major changes in security requirements, it was quickly recognised that the security areas at Heathrow airport had insufficient space and operational capacity to cope with the increased demands. Millar Management reviewed the security layout, process organisation and space utilisation at each terminal of the aiport. Since the airport operates continually throughout the day, any planned re-organisation had to take place whilst the security areas were in use by passengers. |
Solution The layout of each security area was designed to meet the actual process flow of the security requirements. Unused space was eliminated. Millar Management Project Managed the improvements at Terminal 4. Space was increased by extending into the airport retail area. Additional security lanes were installed with extended queuing mazes. The rollerbeds of the X-ray machines were modified to improve the passenger preparation area. Additional X-ray machines were installed to increase throughput capacity. |
Outcome The space and operational capacity of the security area at T4 was increased by 25%. The changes increased the area available for passenger preparation and increased the rate of passenger throughput. The re-organisation was successfully completed whilst ensuring the area remained available for use by passengers. |
