Baggage Handling System

It was identified that an Early Bag Store (EBS) was required at Heathrow's Terminal 3.

A feasibility study was carried out by Millar Management to review the existing layout and operation of the baggage system to determine how the EBS could be incorporated.

 

Solution

The Millar Management project team used their combined architectural and baggage expertise to create a  fully integrated solution. This included the following:

An extension to the building to incorporate a new layout and improve working conditions.

Development of dedicated 300 bag capacity Early Bag Store.

Redesign of conveyor system to redirect bags and improve operational performance

Installation of new lighting and heating systems to improve working conditions.

 

Outcome

Major improvement in the direct baggage operation for Virgin airline.

Major reduction in the mis-sorted baggage and resulting operational costs.

Greatly improved working conditions for the staff with the installation of a new lighting and heating system.
